One of the most enduring, versatile nymphs in fly fishing, imitating a wide range of mayfly nymphs and emergers. Its buggy, spiky hare's-ear body traps air and suggests life, while the gold rib adds segmentation, flash, and durability. Fish weighted or unweighted, dead-drifted or swung.
1. Optionally slide a Gold Brass Bead on; start the Brown Thread and base to the bend.
2. Tie in a short tail of hare's-ear guard hairs or a few Pheasant Tail Fibers.
3. Tie in Gold Wire at the bend for the rib.
4. Dub a slim, slightly fuzzy Hares Ear Dubbing abdomen to two-thirds.
5. Rib forward with 4-6 even turns of gold wire; tie off and trim.
6. Tie in a Pheasant Tail Fibers wingcase over the back.
7. Dub a fuller, spiky thorax; pick out guard hairs for legs.
8. Pull the wingcase forward, tie down, trim; whip finish, head cement.
