Terms of service

Last updated August 6, 2026

The short version

Country Roads Fly Co is a fly tying resource. Some of it is free, some of it is a paid subscription billed monthly, and you can cancel any time and keep what you've paid for through the end of that period. Our tools generate their suggestions automatically, which means they are sometimes wrong — treat what they tell you as a starting point, not gospel. Be sensible on the water.

Who these terms are between

These terms are an agreement between you and Country Roads Fly Company LLC (“we”, “us”), covering countryroadsfly.com and everything on it. By using the site or paying for a subscription, you're agreeing to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.

You need to be old enough to enter a contract where you live in order to hold a paid subscription.

Your account

You're responsible for what happens under your account and for keeping your sign-in details to yourself. An account is for one person — please don't share logins or resell access.

You can delete your account at any time from your dashboard, and it takes effect immediately. Deletion is permanent and cancels any active subscription. Any unused credits go with it and aren't refundable, so spend them before you delete rather than after. If something goes wrong part-way, email scott@countryroadsfly.com and we'll finish it by hand.

Subscriptions and billing

Paid plans are billed monthly in advance through Stripe, who handle the payment details — we never see or store your card number. Subscriptions renew automatically each month until you cancel. Prices are shown on the pricing page and are in US dollars.

  • Upgrades take effect immediately. You're charged the new price, your billing date resets to that day, and your new monthly credits are added to whatever you had left.
  • Downgrades take effect at your next renewal date. You keep your current tier and its credits for the time you've already paid for.
  • There's no proration in either direction.
  • You can cancel any time. You keep your tier through the end of the period you've already paid for, and you aren't billed again.

If we change our prices, we'll tell you before the change applies to your plan, and you're free to cancel rather than accept it.

Credits

The tools run on credits. Every plan includes a monthly allowance, and you can buy top-up credits separately. The two behave differently, and the difference matters:

  • Monthly credits reset each billing period. If you cancel, your allowance returns to the free monthly amount when the subscription ends — they don't carry over past that point.
  • Top-up credits are bought outright and never expire. They stay with you through plan changes, monthly resets, and cancellation until you spend them.

Credits have no cash value and can't be transferred between accounts. If a tool fails because something broke on our end, we return the credits it consumed.

Refunds

All credit purchases are final. We don't offer refunds on credits — used or unused, whether they came with a subscription or were bought as a top-up. Please buy the amount you actually expect to use.

Cancelling a subscription doesn't produce a prorated refund for the unused days either; you keep the tier you paid for until the period ends.

One thing this doesn't cover: if a tool fails because something broke on our end, the credits it consumed are returned to your balance automatically. That isn't a refund — we simply don't charge you for work we didn't deliver. If something goes wrong and the credits don't come back, email us and we'll put it right.

About the tools

Several tools on this site generate their results automatically — identifying insects and flies, suggesting materials and substitutions, and recommending patterns. They draw on our own curated pattern data wherever possible, but they can still be wrong, and they will occasionally be confidently wrong.

Treat their output as a knowledgeable suggestion rather than a verified fact — particularly for anything you'd act on. Check an insect identification against your own eyes and your local knowledge before you rely on it, and check material substitutions before you buy.

Fly tying involves sharp hooks and sharp tools, and fishing takes place near moving water. You're responsible for your own safety, for fishing within your local regulations, and for holding any licence your water requires. Nothing here is a substitute for local regulations or your own judgement.

Acceptable use

Please don't:

  • Scrape, bulk-download, or republish the pattern database or any other content on the site.
  • Resell access, share an account, or use the tools to build a competing product.
  • Attempt to break, overload, or work around the site's security, rate limits, or credit accounting.
  • Upload anything unlawful, or anything you don't have the right to upload.

We may suspend or close an account that does these things, without a refund of the current period or any remaining credits.

Content and ownership

The pattern database, written content, video tutorials, and the site itself belong to Country Roads Fly Company LLC. You're welcome to use what you learn here to tie flies, including flies you sell — that's the point. What you can't do is republish our content as your own.

Anything you upload — a photo of a fly or an insect, your materials inventory — stays yours. You give us permission to process it in order to run the tool you asked for, and nothing more. Output the tools generate for you is yours to use.

Fly patterns are, by long tradition, shared knowledge. Where a pattern has a known originator we credit them; if you believe something here is misattributed, tell us and we'll fix it.

Availability

We aim to keep the site running and the tools working, but we can't promise uninterrupted service. We may add, change, or retire tools over time. If we retire something central to a paid tier, we'll give you notice and a fair way out.

The site is provided as it is, without warranties we haven't explicitly given. To the extent the law allows, our liability for any claim connected to the site is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Changes to these terms

If we make a meaningful change, we'll update this page and revise the date at the top. If a change materially affects a paid subscription, we'll tell you before it applies to you. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept it.
