The Sparkle Dun scaled up for the Western Green Drake — the big early-summer mayfly that brings every large fish in the river to the surface. The fanned deer-hair wing and trailing shuck read as a drake struggling free, which is exactly the version the fish prefer to eat.
1. Thread base — Attach olive thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Shuck — Tie in a short bunch of amber Z-Lon at the bend, extending one hook-gap rearward.
3. Body — Dub a robust, tapered olive body with a yellow-olive cast from the shuck to the 2/3 point.
4. Wing — Stack a substantial bunch of deer hair. Tie in at the 2/3 point, post with thread wraps in front, and fan the wing 180 degrees, upright.
5. Thorax — Dub olive dubbing around the wing base on both sides.
6. Head — Whip finish behind the eye and apply head cement.
