Vince Marinaro's thorax style features a centrally-tied hackle clipped on the bottom that allows the fly to sit flat and natural in the film. For glass-smooth water during BWO hatches, few patterns are more effective.
1. Thread base — Attach olive thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Tail — Tie in a sparse bunch of dun hackle fibers at the bend. Divide with a figure-eight wrap into a split V-tail, one hook-gap wide.
3. Wings — At the exact midpoint, tie in two matched dun hackle tips upright and divided. Wings should stand one hook-gap tall.
4. Body — Dub a slim olive body from the bend up to and around the wing base. The dubbing continues both behind and in front of the wing.
5. Hackle — Tie in a dun hackle at the midpoint alongside the wings. Wind 2 turns behind and 2 turns in front of the wings. Tie off.
6. Head & clip — Build a tiny head, whip finish and apply head cement. Once dry, clip all hackle fibers from directly below the hook shank so the fly sits flat.
