R.S. Austin's Devon pattern (1890s), named for the famously secret pinkish dubbing from a tup — a ram. Yellow silk at the rear, a blush of pink mixture at the thorax, and blue dun hackle: the enduring pattern for pale wateries and other small light mayflies on smooth water.
1. Thread — Attach yellow silk (or 8/0 yellow thread) and wrap a base to the bend.
2. Tail — Tie in a few stiff light blue dun hackle fibers, one hook-gap long.
3. Rear body — Wrap the yellow silk in smooth touching turns over the rear half — bare silk, glowing.
4. Thorax — Dub a small ball of pinkish 'tup's mixture' over the front third.
5. Hackle — Tie in a light blue dun hackle and wind 3–4 turns. Tie off.
6. Head — Small head, whip finish, cement.
