Dan Byford's rabbit-strip baitfish — the fly that made the zonker strip a category. A pearl mylar body flashes like a minnow's flank while the fur strip swims over the top with an action no feather can match. Natural for sculpin-brown, white or olive for baitfish; it all works.
1. Thread base — Attach red thread at the bend.
2. Body — Slide a length of pearl mylar tubing over the shank. Tie down the rear end at the bend with the red thread, whip finish there, and re-attach white thread at the eye. Tie down the front of the tubing behind the eye.
3. Strip — Cut a zonker strip about 1.5 shank-lengths. Part the fur at the rear tie-in point, re-attach the red thread at the bend, and lash the strip down over the tubing at the bend. Whip finish the rear thread.
4. Front — Pull the strip forward over the top, part the fur behind the eye, and tie it down firmly.
5. Collar (optional) — A turn of soft hackle or a wisp of flash at the head.
6. Head — Build a neat head, whip finish, and cement.
