A classic Catskill Variant with oversized hackle, stripped quill body, and paired hackle-tip wings. The stiff, long tail and generous hackle allow the fly to skate and dance on the surface — killing during selective surface activity.
1. Thread base — Attach tan thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Tail — Mix a few brown and grizzly hackle fibers together. Tie in at the bend, extending 1.5× hook-shank in length. Keep them stiff and straight.
3. Wings — At the 2/3 point, tie in two matched grizzly hackle tips upright and divided with figure-eight wraps, hook-gap in height.
4. Body — Tie in a stripped hackle quill at the bend. Wind forward in tight, touching turns to just behind the wings. The quill creates a segmented, tapered body. Varnish lightly while wet and allow to dry.
5. Hackle — Tie in an oversized ginger hackle behind the wings. Wind 4–5 full turns through the thorax. The hackle should extend noticeably beyond the hook gap. Tie off and trim.
6. Head — Build a small, neat head. Whip finish and apply head cement.
