Inch worms drop from overhanging trees onto streams in spring and early summer, and trout key on them heavily. A bright chartreuse-green body on a hook is all it takes — simplicity at its best.
1. Thread base — Attach olive thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Body — Dub a full, segmented green body from the bend to just behind the eye. Work the dubbing in slightly loose sections to create natural body segmentation. The body should be noticeably plump — inchworms are fat for their length.
3. Head — Build a slightly darker brown or olive thread collar behind the eye to suggest the head. Whip finish and apply head cement.
4. Finishing touch — Optional: apply a thin bead of green foam or a drop of head cement to the body for added durability and water resistance.
