The North Country dressing for the March Brown: hare's fur on orange silk, ribbed gold, with a speckled brown partridge hackle. Swung through the riffles on a spring afternoon it takes fish during the hatch and between hatches alike — spiders don't need permission.
1. Thread — Attach orange silk (or 8/0 orange thread) and wrap to the bend.
2. Rib — Tie in fine gold wire.
3. Body — Dub hare's ear fur loosely on the orange silk and wrap a scruffy body over the rear two-thirds. Counter-wind the rib. Tie off.
4. Hackle — Tie in a brown partridge feather by the tip. Wind 1–2 sparse turns, sweep back, and secure.
5. Head — Small head, whip finish, cement.
