The Pale Evening Dun imitates the evening-active pale mayflies — sulphurs and PMDs — that hatch in the last hour of light. A cream or pale yellow body and dun wings are essential for the selective fish these hatches produce.
1. Thread base — Attach cream thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Tail — Tie in a sparse bunch of dun hackle fibers at the bend, one hook-gap in length.
3. Wings — At the 2/3 point, tie in two matched dun CDC tips upright and slightly divided. Wings should stand hook-gap in height.
4. Body — Dub a slim, smooth cream body from the bend to just behind the wings.
5. Hackle — Tie in a dun hackle behind the wings. Wind 2–3 turns through the thorax. Tie off and trim.
6. Head — Build a small head. Whip finish and apply head cement.
