The Mahogany Dun hatch is a fall sleeper — fish that have seen every fly all summer are suddenly willing to rise again. This parachute version is visible in the low autumn light and sits perfectly in the film.
1. Thread base — Attach brown thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Post — At the 1/3 point, tie in a small bunch of white poly yarn upright. Build tight base wraps.
3. Tail — Tie in a sparse bunch of dun hackle fibers at the bend.
4. Body — Dub a smooth, slightly tapered mahogany body from the bend up to the post base.
5. Hackle — Tie in a dun hackle at the base of the post. Wind 4–5 parachute turns descending around the post. Tie off at the base.
6. Head — Build a small head in front of the post. Whip finish and apply head cement.
