George Anderson's cased caddis — a rough hare's-ear case with the pale larva 'peeking' out the front, its black ostrich-herl head nodding in the current. Cased caddis are bottom ballast in every freestone river year-round, and almost nothing else imitates them.
1. Weight — Wrap 8–12 turns of lead wire midshank. Cover with thread.
2. Rib — Tie in fine gold wire at the bend.
3. Case — Dub a rough, slightly tapered hare's ear case over the rear two-thirds. Counter-wind the rib. Tie off. Pick it out — cases are messy.
4. Larva — Dub a short, smooth band of cream just ahead of the case — the peeking grub.
5. Head — Wrap 1–2 turns of black ostrich herl in front of the larva.
6. Finish — Whip finish and cement.
