Montana's do-everything wet: peacock body under a palmered brown hackle, a gray squirrel-tail wing, and a peacock herl head. Swing it as a caddis, strip it as a streamer, dead-drift it as a stonefly — the Picket Pin has never much cared which.
1. Thread base — Attach black thread and wrap to the bend.
2. Tail — Tie in a small bunch of brown hackle fibers.
3. Body hackle prep — Tie in a brown hackle by the tip at the bend.
4. Body — Tie in 2–3 peacock herls, twist, and wrap to the 3/4 point. Palmer the brown hackle forward through it in open turns. Tie off both.
5. Wing — Tie in a bunch of gray squirrel tail on top, extending to the end of the tail.
6. Head — Wrap 1–2 peacock herls as a collar-head behind the eye. Whip finish and cement.
