Craig Mathews and John Juracek's Sparkle Dun pairs the Comparadun's fanned deer hair wing with a Z-Lon trailing shuck suggesting an emerging nymph. This combination triggers strikes during the most selective BWO hatches.
1. Thread base — Attach olive thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Shuck — Tie in a short bunch of tan/amber Z-Lon at the bend, extending one hook-gap rearward. This suggests the nymphal shuck still attached.
3. Body — Dub a slim, smooth olive body from the shuck tie-in forward to the 2/3 point.
4. Wing — Stack a substantial bunch of deer hair to align the tips. Tie in at the 2/3 point with several tight wraps. The tips should flare forward over the eye; pull them back and post with a few wraps in front to fan 180 degrees. The wing stands upright and fanned.
5. Thorax — Dub a small amount of olive dubbing on each side of the wing base to complete the thorax.
6. Head — Whip finish behind the eye and apply head cement.
