The Trico spinner fall is one of the most demanding hatches in trout fishing. Thousands of tiny spent spinners on the surface demand a small, accurate imitation. This pattern nails the black body and white spent wings.
1. Thread base — Attach black thread and build a fine base to the bend.
2. Tail — Tie in a small bunch of white hackle fibers at the bend, split into a wide V with a figure-eight wrap. Tails should be long — 1.5× hook shank.
3. Abdomen — Dub a very slim, smooth black abdomen from the bend to the midpoint. Keep it thread-thin.
4. Wing — At the midpoint, tie in a small bunch of white CDC or poly yarn horizontally, figure-eight style to divide into two spent wings extending to each side. Wings should be one hook-shank long.
5. Thorax — Dub a slightly fuller white thorax over the wing tie-in point.
6. Head — Build a tiny head. Whip finish and apply head cement. A dab of floatant on the wings before fishing is essential.
