Walt Young's impossibly simple nymph — just a curved hook and rough hare's ear dubbing. The shaggy, segmented appearance imitates sowbugs, caddis larvae, or whatever the fish imagine it to be.
1. Thread base — Attach tan thread to the curved hook at the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Rib — Tie in a length of copper wire at the bend.
3. Body — Dub a full, rough hare's ear body from the bend to just behind the eye. Pull on the dubbing to create an intentionally shaggy, legged appearance. The dubbing should taper slightly thicker in the thorax region.
4. Rib — Counter-wind copper wire forward in open spirals through the dubbing. Tie off and trim.
5. Head — Build a small, neat head. Whip finish and apply head cement. Pick out additional dubbing fibers with a needle for a shaggier look.
