The Mother's Day caddis blizzard — dark little caddis in astonishing numbers just as spring flows drop into shape. A dark body under a black downwing is all the imitation the hatch needs; the hard part is picking your fly out of the crowd on the water.
1. Thread base — Attach black thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Rib — Tie in fine gold wire at the bend.
3. Body hackle prep — Tie in a grizzly hackle by the tip at the bend.
4. Body — Dub a slim dark gray-black body to the 3/4 point.
5. Palmer & rib — Wind the grizzly hackle forward in open turns; counter-wind the gold wire through it to lock it. Tie off both. Optionally clip the hackle low on the bottom.
6. Wing — Stack a small bunch of black deer hair. Tie in at the 3/4 point angling back over the body, tips just past the bend. Trim butts to a small head shape.
7. Finish — Whip finish over the trimmed butts and cement.
