A close cousin to the Elk Hair Caddis but tied with deer hair for a darker, lower-riding silhouette. Excellent for evening caddis activity when fish are sipping low and refusing higher-floating patterns.
1. Thread base — Attach tan thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Rib — Tie in fine gold wire at the bend.
3. Body hackle prep — Tie in a brown hackle by the tip at the bend, shiny side rearward.
4. Body — Dub a full, slightly rough hare's ear body from the bend to the 3/4 point.
5. Palmer hackle — Wind the brown hackle forward over the body in open spirals. Counter-wind gold wire through the hackle to lock it. Tie off both.
6. Wing — Stack a small bunch of deer hair to align the tips. Tie in just behind the eye. Tips should extend one hook-gap past the bend. Trim butts at an angle to form the head.
7. Head — Whip finish over trimmed butts and apply head cement.
