Wayne Buszek's California pattern has become a universal caddis attractor. The orange dubbed body and elk hair wing — palmered through with ginger hackle — float high and stay visible in fast runs. An excellent attractor alternative to the Elk Hair Caddis.
1. Thread base — Attach orange thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Rib — Tie in fine gold wire at the bend.
3. Body hackle prep — Tie in a ginger hackle by the tip at the bend.
4. Body — Dub a full, slightly rough orange body from the bend to the 3/4 point.
5. Palmer & rib — Wind the ginger hackle forward in open spirals over the body. Counter-wind the gold wire through the hackle to lock it. Tie off both.
6. Wing — Stack a small bunch of elk hair to align the tips. Tie in just behind the eye, angling back over the body. Tips should extend just past the hook bend. Trim butts.
7. Head — Whip finish over trimmed butts and apply head cement.
