The subsurface half of the early black stonefly hatch. Little black stone nymphs migrate toward the banks before crawling out, and a slim black nymph drifted along the edges in February and March is often the first productive nymphing of the year.
1. Thread base — Attach black thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Tails — Tie in two black goose biots at the bend, split into a short V.
3. Rib — Tie in fine black wire at the bend.
4. Abdomen — Dub a slim black abdomen over the rear two-thirds. Counter-wind the wire rib. Tie off.
5. Wing case — Tie in a slip of Thin Skin (or dark turkey) at the two-thirds point.
6. Thorax — Dub a slightly fuller black thorax. Pull the wing case over and tie down.
7. Head — Build a small head, whip finish, and cement. Pick out a few thorax fibers as legs.
