Doug Swisher's bullet-head rubber-legs attractor. One bunch of deer hair supplies tail, back, and the folded bullet head; white rubber legs cross at the sides in the X that names the fly. Hopper, stonefly, general commotion — pounded along grassy banks it draws the year's most emphatic eats.
1. Thread base — Attach yellow thread and wrap to the bend.
2. Tail — Tie in a stacked bunch of deer hair at the bend, tips one gap-length past the bend. Bind the butts along the top of the shank and trim any excess.
3. Body — Wrap yellow floss (or the tying thread, built up) over the rear two-thirds. Tie off.
4. Bullet head prep — Tie in a second stacked bunch of deer hair just behind the eye with the TIPS FORWARD over the eye. Wrap the butts down.
5. Bullet head — Fold the hair back around the shank on all sides and bind it down at the 1/3 point, forming the bullet head and a rearward hair collar over the body.
6. Legs — At the same tie-down, bind one white rubber leg along each side so the ends project forward and back — the X.
7. Finish — Whip finish at the leg tie-down and cement.
