The classic Catskill March Brown — divided wood duck wings, mixed hackle, and hare's ear body. Theodore Gordon himself fished a version of this during the first great hatch of Eastern spring. A foundational American fly pattern.
1. Thread base — Attach tan thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Tail — Mix a few brown and grizzly hackle fibers. Tie in at the bend, one hook-gap in length.
3. Wings — At the 2/3 point, tie in two matched wood duck flank sections upright and divided with figure-eight wraps.
4. Body — Dub a moderately rough, slightly tapered hare's ear body from the bend to just behind the wings.
5. Hackle — Tie in one brown and one grizzly hackle behind the wings. Wind both interleaved through the thorax area. Tie off and trim.
6. Head — Build a small, neat head. Whip finish and apply head cement.
