Kelly Galloup's neutrally buoyant sculpin — the fly that helped launch modern streamer fishing. The broad deer-hair head is left loose so the fly hovers and darts side-to-side on the strip instead of sinking away. Fished on a sinking line, banged off the banks, it hunts big browns.
1. Thread base — Attach thread and wrap to the bend.
2. Tail — Tie in a full yellow marabou plume tip, one shank-length long.
3. Body — Tie in flat Diamond Braid and wrap forward in tight overlapping turns to a third behind the eye. Tie off.
4. Underwing — Tie in a sparse bunch of white calf tail on top, reaching the middle of the tail.
5. Wing — Tie in a yellow-dyed mallard flank feather flat over the top, tip even with the marabou.
6. Head & collar — Spin 2–3 loose clumps of deer hair. Clip the head broad and flat on the bottom, wide at the cheeks — but leave the collar long and loose. The loose head is what makes it swim.
7. Finish — Whip finish and cement the thread wraps.
