The Rat-Faced McDougal pairs a spun-and-clipped deer hair body with white calf tail wings and ginger hackle. The deer hair body is nearly unsinkable — excellent in fast water where buoyancy beats precision.
1. Thread base — Attach cream thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Tail — Tie in a small bunch of brown hackle fibers at the bend.
3. Body — Spin 2–3 clumps of deer body hair on the rear half of the shank, packing each tightly. Clip to a slightly flattened, oval shape.
4. Wings — At the 2/3 point, tie in a bunch of white calf tail upright and divide into two equal wings.
5. Hackle — Tie in a ginger hackle behind the wings. Wind 3–4 turns through the thorax. Tie off and trim.
6. Head — Build a small, neat head. Whip finish and apply head cement.
