The Royal Humpy combines the buoyant hump body of the Humpy with the Royal Coachman color scheme — peacock herl, red floss, and white wings. The result is a heavy-water attractor that's visible from any angle.
1. Thread base — Attach black thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Tail — Tie in a small bunch of elk hair at the bend.
3. Deer hair prep — Tie in a substantial bunch of deer hair at the bend, butts pointing forward.
4. Royal body — Wind 2 peacock herls from the tail forward to the 1/3 point. Then wind red floss from the 1/3 to the 2/3 point. Then wind 2 more peacock herls from the 2/3 point to the wing tie-in.
5. Hump & wing — Pull the deer hair forward over the peacock-floss-peacock body. Tie down firmly at the 2/3 point. Lift the tips upright and divide into white-looking wings. Trim butts.
6. Hackle — Tie in a brown hackle behind the wings. Wind 3–4 turns. Tie off and trim.
7. Head — Build a small head. Whip finish and apply head cement.
