The Royal Humpy pairs the Humpy's deer-hair hump with a red floss underbody and upright white calf-tail wings — the red flash below, the white wings above. A rough-water attractor you can track in any light, popularized by Jack Dennis's Western Trout Fly Tying Manual.
1. Thread base — Attach black thread behind the eye and build a base to the bend.
2. Tail — Tie in a small bunch of moose body hair at the bend.
3. Hump prep — Tie in a bunch of natural deer hair at the bend by the butts, tips rearward.
4. Underbody — Wind red floss over the rear half of the shank in smooth, touching turns.
5. Hump — Pull the deer hair forward over the red floss and tie down at the 2/3 point. Trim the tips.
6. Wings — Tie in a bunch of white calf tail just ahead of the hump, upright, and divide into two wings with figure-eight wraps.
7. Hackle — Tie in a brown hackle behind the wings. Wind 3–4 turns behind and in front. Tie off and trim.
8. Head — Build a small head. Whip finish and apply head cement.
