The Micro Chubby is a modern refinement of Chubby-style attractor dry flies, which trace their lineage back to the iconic Chubby Chernobyl. While the original Chubby was intentionally oversized to imitate stoneflies and hoppers, anglers quickly learned that trout often respond better to a smaller, cleaner silhouette—especially on pressured water. By downsizing the profile while keeping the core elements—foam buoyancy, rubber legs, and a visible body—the Micro Chubby excels as a searching dry fly, a terrestrial imitation, and a highly effective hopper-dropper indicator fly. Its ability to float heavy droppers while remaining subtle enough for selective trout has made it a staple in modern fly boxes.
1. Thread base — Start the Olive Thread behind the eye and lay a smooth base back to the bend of the Wide Gap Hook.
2. Tail/flash — Tie in a short, sparse clump of Crystal Flash, pearl at the bend so it extends just past the hook point.
3. Underbody — Dub a thin, buggy body of spikey synthetic dubbing, amber from the bend to about two-thirds up the shank.
4. Foam overbody — Tie in a thin strip of Orange Foam at the bend, pull it forward over the underbody, and secure to form the first foam segment.
5. Legs — Tie in one Rubber legs, barred on each side at the tie-down point so they splay outward.
6. Second segment — Dub a little more amber dubbing, fold the foam forward again, and lock it down; leave a short foam tab as a head/indicator.
7. Finish — Build a small thread head, whip finish, and add a drop of head cement.
